How does your service work?

When someone chooses to sponsor a person for PrisonMail, they are creating a mailbox identifying the recipient and where the letters will be sent (name, address, and don't forget to include the inmate number). The sponsor can then invite any number of people to become members of that mailbox. All of them can contribute messages to the mailbox and twice a week the messages are aggregated into a single letter, printed, stuffed into an envelope, and mailed to the recipient.

You create a message on your computer using our easy, online system or simply by responding to our email reminder. We convert your electronic message into a physical letter and send it out. Your loved one receives your letter through regular mail. PrisonMail is the quick, easy, hassle-free connection between you and your loved ones.

We already have regular mail service and telephones. Why should I use your service?

As many of you can attest, relying on telephone calls to stay connected with someone who is in jail can be very expensive because they are collect and sometimes long distance. Writing letters can be difficult because many of us feel that unless we write a long letter it is inappropriate.

PrisonMail provides an effective way to fill in the gap. With PrisonMail, many people can contribute little updates and all of the messages are aggregated together to create a single letter that will be mailed to the inmate. If ten or more people participate in the mailbox, it becomes a very cost effective way to keep everyone connected.

The Mailbox Sponsor can then use the PrisonMail system to send emails inviting other friends or family to use the mailbox to communicate with your loved one. Recipients will receive notification by e-mail of the sponsorship, and an e-mail introduction describing PrisonMail and our services.
